Get Active with Our Top 5 Tips

April 6, 2020

Want to get active but no idea where to start? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Making exercise a part of your daily routine is much easier than you might think, no matter how busy you are or what else you've got going on. Below, we share our top five tips on how to get active, whatever your ability level.

1. Change One Thing at a Time

Don't change your whole lifestyle at once – it's unsustainable. First, make small changes, whether it's taking the stairs over the elevator, or walking to work every day. Once these changes become sustainable habits, you can make another change until you're stronger, healthier, and more active than ever before.

2. Pick an Activity You Enjoy

It's so much easier to exercise regularly if you pick something you enjoy. If you already know what kinds of physical activity you're drawn to, start there. On the other hand, if you're new to working out and you've got no idea what interests you, that's okay! Try different types of exercise and find the right fit, whether it's yoga, spin, weightlifting, or something else.

Most importantly – no matter where you are in your fitness journey, it's never a bad time to try something new.

3. Set Yourself Goals

If you don't set yourself manageable goals, you'll end up feeling lost pretty quickly. That's where forward planning comes in. It's really simple – just set yourself goals and decide how you'll get there. For example, if you plan on losing 20 pounds, you could set yourself a daily calorie goal, or turn your commute into exercise. Keep track of your progress and make changes if necessary.

Remember, you can always consult with a personal trainer for extra help – that's what we fitness professionals are here for!

4. Stay Accountable

There's only one person you should be exercising for – yourself! Once you've set goals, schedule workouts in your daily planner and stick to them. If you're struggling to stay motivated, try a new class or activity. A great way to get started is by using a fitness tracker or another device that measures your daily step count and activity level. They're also useful for tracking your heart rate during exercise.

5. Fit Your Workout Around Your Schedule

There's no need to train for hours on end, especially if you're busy and juggling a hectic schedule. Some exercise is always better than nothing, and even if you've only got 20 minutes, there's still plenty you can get done, from yoga flows to sprint intervals on the treadmill. Once you discover the type of exercise you enjoy, it's much easier to stick to a routine, no matter how busy you get.
