Get out of your training rut now with these expert tips

September 16, 2020

If you exercise regularly, you might eventually find yourself becoming bored with your routine or feeling like your results have plateaued. Don’t worry: this is normal, and it happens to most gym-goers at some point.

But without taking action, it’s easy to get discouraged or fall back onto lazy behaviors. The personal training experts of Strive 24 Hour Fitness have compiled some top tips for getting out of your training rut:

1. Identify your goals and make a plan

Identifying your goals is key when starting any exercise program. If you never set goals for yourself, then your workouts might feel aimless and unstructured.

Here’s how to get started: first, identify quantifiable goals that you can easily measure. For example, you might want to lose a few inches, gain muscle mass, boost your mileage when running, or increase your weights when lifting.

Once you’ve identified your goals, then you can create an exercise routine that allows you to achieve smaller milestones on the way to your ultimate goal. Rather than heading to the gym without a plan in mind, this will give you a more proactive approach to training.

An added benefit is that seeing your progress will keep you motivated. This can prevent you from falling into a rut in the future.

2. Go outside of your comfort zone

Think back to when you first started working out: your first exercise routine was probably brutal, and now it’s a breeze. But working out is all about challenging yourself. It’s hard to do so if you constantly stay inside your comfort zone.

Do you usually hit the treadmill? Head outdoors instead and pick up a sport. Are you a fan of cardio? Start a heavy lifting routine and see what your body can do when you really challenge yourself.

3. Get an accountability partner

If you’re in a training rut because you lack the motivation, getting an accountability partner should be your first priority. You’d be surprised at how much easier it is to stick to your exercise routine when you have someone to hold you accountable.

The next time you go to the gym, consider inviting a friend to join you. This will help you be more intentional during training sessions instead of just going through the motions. Having an exercise buddy will also make your workouts more enjoyable, and you’ll be less likely to skip the gym on days when you’re feeling discouraged.

4. Consider professional personal training

When all else fails, a professional personal training session can be just what you need to get back on track. A personal trainer will take the time to understand your fitness inspirations, and then they can create a customized training routine to reach your goals.

This is especially helpful if you feel like your results have plateaued. Poor results can be caused by improper form, not pushing yourself hard enough, or doing the wrong type of workouts. A professional trainer will be able to point you in the right direction and set you up for success.
